Wine + Card Game Pairings

Kings in the Corner | 2021 Dundee Hills Pinot Noir

  • Objective: Be the first to get rid of all your cards.
  • Setup:
    • Use a standard 52-card deck.
    • Deal 7 cards to each player.
    • Place the rest of the deck in the center as the draw pile.
    • Place 4 cards face up in a cross pattern around the draw pile (these are the starting “corner” piles).
  • Gameplay:
    • Players take turns, starting with the dealer.
    • On your turn, you can:
      • Play a card on one of the corner piles, in descending order and alternating colors (e.g., a red 6 on a black 7).
      • Move entire piles to a different pile following the same rule.
      • Play a king in an empty corner space.
    • Draw a card from the draw pile at the end of your turn.
  • Winning: The first player to play all their cards wins. If no one can play, the player with the fewest cards left wins.

Oh Hell | 2022 Dichotomie Elements Brut Bubbles

  • Objective: Score points by accurately predicting how many tricks you will win. (In card games, a trick refers to a round in which each player plays one card from their hand. The highest card, typically based on the game’s specific rules, wins the trick.)
  • Setup:
    • Use a standard 52-card deck.
    • Deal a decreasing number of cards in each round (e.g., 10 cards in round 1, 9 in round 2, down to 1).
    • The dealer flips the top card of the remaining deck, which determines the trump suit.
  • Gameplay:
    • Players predict how many tricks (rounds) they will win after receiving their cards.
    • Players take turns playing cards. The highest card in the leading suit wins unless a trump suit is played.
    • The player who wins the trick leads the next round.
  • Scoring:
    • Players earn points for correctly guessing the number of tricks they won.
    • Exact prediction = 10 points + the number of tricks won.
    • Incorrect prediction = 0 points.
  • Winning: The player with the most points at the end of all rounds wins.

Cribbage | 2021 Amelia Rose Pinot Noir

  • Objective: Be the first to reach 121 points by creating specific combinations of cards.
  • Setup:
    • Use a standard 52-card deck.
    • Players are dealt 6 cards each.
    • Each player discards 2 cards into the “crib” (a separate hand used later by the dealer).
  • Gameplay:
    • Pegs: Players take turns playing one card at a time, trying to make totals of 15, pairs, runs, or other scoring combinations.
    • After all cards are played, both players count points in their hands based on pairs, runs, 15s, and flushes.
    • The dealer counts the points in the crib after the players’ hands are scored.
  • Scoring:
    • 15 = 2 points.
    • Pair = 2 points.
    • Run (consecutive cards) = 1 point per card.
    • Flush (same suit) = 4 points for 4 cards, 5 points if the starter card matches.
    • A full cribbage board is used to keep track of points.
  • Winning: The first player to reach 121 points wins the game.
